Q: How did you get a cast of TV actors for your low budget directorial
debut?
A: Despite not having a big budget, the actors I cast Michael J Jackson
('Judge John Deed'& 'Brookside') and Elizabeth Elvin ('Heavens Gate' & 'State
of Play') were both attracted to the dramatic possibilities of the script.
I strongly believe that the foundation of any powerful film is a strong
script and this is what I strived for. As a director, it was a privilege
to work with Michael and Liz. Their performances brought my script to
life and I learned a great deal about directing actors from working with
them.
Q: What was the budget?
A: 150 pounds!!! To make the film I wanted to make, rather than the film
financiers would want me to make, I had to make the film low budget.
This meant pushing the theory that you can get anything and everything
for nothing to its very limit. Fortunately I got a great cast and crew
and the support of Shepperton Studios for nothing because they thought
the idea was bold and provocative and liked the script. The response
the film has received from people in the industry who have seen it
has been very encouraging despite the fact that I made the film outside
the industry in order to tell the story I really wanted to tell. Ultimately
I think the most important films are the films that take risks in their
storytelling.
